What is a NACE code?
Think of it as a company’s ID card. Each number and letter represents a specific economic activity and allows us to classify companies into broad categories such as industry, commerce, or services.
And what is a Prodcom code?
This code focuses more on the products that are manufactured or sold. It helps us understand what kinds of goods or services a company produces and how they are categorized within a more detailed system.

Why are these codes important for assessing the risk of carbon leakage?
When we want to determine which sectors are more likely to move their production to countries with fewer environmental restrictions (in other words, to “leak” carbon), these codes serve as a guide. By analyzing company data using these codes, we can identify:
- Which sectors are more emissions-intensive: Those that generate more greenhouse gases per unit produced.
- Which products are more likely to be relocated: Those with higher international competition and lower barriers to production abroad.
In short, NACE and Prodcom codes are essential tools for understanding the structure of our economy and assessing the environmental risks associated with each activity. Thanks to them, we can make more informed decisions to combat climate change!
